Disappointed was the feeling I felt when we needed to cancel our CAFNB bus tour to Sight and Sound Theater to see the story of Esther played out on stage. The Sight and Sound stage isn’t just any stage, but a panoramic stage with massive sets and live animals. We had stops planned along the way and then stops on the way home. A tour of Amish country and outlet shopping were two of the highlights that had to be put on hold. I had also looked forward to the fellowship on the bus. It was a season when everything was cancelled, and disappointment hung on every corner. Before last March who would have ever thought the border between Canada would be closed for eight months and counting?

A few days before we figured out that COVID-19 was going to change our entire world, I was in Toronto for meetings. With an evening to put in before returning home I bought a last-minute ticket to Come from Away at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. It was my second time, but I’m positive I could see it multiple times and enjoy it more every time. Such an intriguing part of our collective history—especially in North America. September 11, 2001 war was declared on our own soil—the Corona Virus was a different kind of war, yet it felt very heavy/serious.

The name of a popular Swedish Rock Band, Roxette. Marie Fredrkksson and Per Gessie were the dynamic duo that formed in 1986. Their album Look Sharp! was released in 1988 in the USA. The group was known for hits like: She’s Got the Look, Church of Your Heart, Joyride, Listen to Your Heart, and Spending My Time. There was certainly nothing overtly religious about their ultra-pop music; however, it ranged from upbeat “bubble gum pop” to some pretty deep break up songs.

Good vs. Evil is the theme of our favorite shows, our favorite novels, and lessons from history. For anyone who loves cowboy movies and understands this genre, the white cowboy hats always win in the end. The climax of any good story builds to evil nearly taking over and then good passes in the inside lane. There is something about “good” winning the day that delights our spirit. It is the struggle in the human condition put on display. We are always thrilled when we see these victory stories come true in the past or the present.

As disappointing as it is to see the stocks and bonds dip in profit, there is another type of investment where we are seeing returns. Matthew 6:19-21 says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”.

In my earliest memories of my grandfather he’s sitting in his favorite chair quoting the 91st Psalm. He would recite the King James Version, and he’d quote it often and from memory. Gramp had committed many Scriptures to memory. Although I’m not sure how he came to choose certain passages to meditate on, Psalm 91 was one of those chapters. I can hear his voice yet strong and clear with Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans...

Recently, Canada’s favourite female rock star, Avril Lavigne, came out with the #1 hit that sort of surprised everyone. Lavigne has been out of the limelight a few years. There were many rumours the 34-year-old has lived a lot of life already, two marriages, two divorces, but most recently a battle with Lyme’s Disease. The words to her new smash hit could have been taken out of Psalm 69.
