Issue 32 - Fall 2022
Maybe you have seen the Jesus Revolution this past month. It was an amazing hit at the box office grossing almost 40 million to date. Many were on Facebook talking about how much they enjoyed this nostalgic true story of the “Jesus Freaks” or Jesus People who came through the 60’s searching for something beyond the sex, drugs and rock and roll culture of the day. The release was on the heels of the Asbury Revival, it was heart-warming to see God work (even through people’s imperfections) to lead the United States closer to Christ. Perhaps the most inspiring part of the story was seeing all the young people depicted coming out of lifestyles of addiction and sin and taking up their cross and following Jesus. On a side note, many Christians felt the profits at the box office sent a message to Hollywood that faith-based movies can be a hit.
The movie piqued my curiosity about a movement that was happening when I was taking my first steps in the world. I downloaded the book of the same name by Greg Laurie whose story is captured in the movie. Both Greg and Lonnie Frisbee (one of the other lead characters) speak of the disfunction in their homes growing up. Their conversion to faith was a remarkable work of God. Both men only had one small influence towards things of faith in their childhood and in both cases, it came to them through their grandmothers. I thought this was interesting. The Lord often uses the steady influence of a grandparent in the life of a child or a young person to influence them towards Godly thinking or lead them towards the path of righteousness.
One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. ~ Psalm 145:4

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. ~ Proverbs 3:5-6
The definition of trust is: confident expectation of something; hope. I was recently in Hong Kong on a recruitment trip for my school. It was my first time back in this part of the world since 2020. There were a lot of small travel things to get used to again. The largest thing may have been getting with the crowds of people after everything with Covid. In Hong Kong we typically travel using their MTR (subway) system. It is very convenient and easy to navigate. My first time down to the train platform I waited and when the doors of the train opened it was packed full of people. I was there during a busy part of the day and all of a sudden I realized I would need to step in that train if I planned to get to my destination.
As that first train pulled out I realized that I have never seen the front of one of these trains. The door to the train car opened and I stepped in and trusted the entire system to get me safely to one, two or three stops down the line. How easy it has been for me to learn this trust while traveling. Whether it is the pilot in the airplane, the taxi driver who can’t speak English or the reliance on the local people that you meet.
Imagine how much more we can trust the one who made us. The Psalmist said, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful,I know that full well.” His plans for us are good and there is no room for doubt. We should step off the platform of our lives and step into His will without a second thought. His plans will lead us in the right direction.
